Children’s feet deserve the best

Children barefoot running on grass

When you think of the everyday, all-weather rough ‘n’ tumble school shoes must withstand, it makes sense to choose a pair that will last the course. There may be cheaper styles available on the high street but it does pay to buy a quality school shoe.

So why spend on quality school shoes?

Constructed with double-stitched layers of supple leather, well-made shoes are durable and offer good arch support. With padded tongues and shock-absorbing heels, they also have breathable and antibacterial soles to promote coolness and hygiene as well as that all-important comfort during the demanding days that school feet are on the go. Add to that a proper fitting session in a shop with a ‘Society of Shoe Fitters’ certification and you can be confident your children’s feet are receiving the best possible treatment.

Trained fitters

Trained fitters offer individual care and are skilled at assessing the whole fit — not just the toe space. They can spot potential problems with regard to rubbing ankles and heels, tightness and arch support. Nevertheless it’s always best to wear the shoes at home after a purchase.

Walk about indoors for half-an-hour to check the fit, and for rubbing. Provided they haven’t been worn outside most shops will accept a return or exchange.

Strict dress codes

There are often lots of styles to choose from, and it’s worth noting that certain styles may not be acceptable at some of the schools with strict dress codes, but that’s where a good local shop can often provide knowledge of the local schools’ preferences.

Best to buy early

Good quality school shoes start at around £35 for styles from brands such as Primigi, Clarks and Start-rite. From the moment the children break up for summer the next term’s shoes start to sell, with shops getting very busy by the end of August, so it’s best to go early if you can to ensure the best choice of sizes and styles.
