Clearing Your House

Get organised & make some cash!

This is a great time of year to have a good sort out at home and maybe clear a few items out of the house before you start preparing for Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas parties. Also if by doing this you can make a bit cash then it has to be even better and very handy with an expensive time of year approaching. Here are a few options you might like to consider:

Selling Online

Selling on an online auction, for example eBay or an online sales site such as Gumtree. You may have cleared out unwanted items such as CDs, books, household items, car parts, craft items, virtually anything really! You will need to set up a seller’s account but don’t be alarmed — it’s a relatively easy process that you are guided through online. Once this is completed you create your listings, again you are guided through. A useful tip is to research how much postage and packing costs as you need to factor this into your asking prices.

Selling CDs, DVDs, Books & Games

Again you can do this online and it is straightforward through various online shops and traders, for example Music Magpie. You can check how much items are worth using barcodes or ISBN numbers through the website or apps.

Car Boot Sales

Car boot sales are still popular and there is probably one that happens near you on a regular basis, see carbootjunction.com. For what is usually a small fee you rent a space for your car and can display the goods you want to sell. Be prepared on the day to get up very early and set up your goods with either items already priced or an idea of what you will accept. Again this is a good time of year for selling in this way and is particularly good for selling unwanted children’s toys, old records and books and all sorts of other items. You may be surprised by what other people are interested in that you just want to get rid of!

Unwanted Clothes

It is now possible to turn your unwanted/outgrown clothes into cash with an increasing number of “cash for clothes” shops. All you need to do is fill bags/dustbin sacks with the items where depending on weight you will receive cash. Other options with clothing are to sell through ASOS Marketplace where there are no listing fees but a flat commission taken. Some towns may have dress agencies where you can sell more expensive labelled items, again with a commission taken.

Other Items

Other items that you can sell or even recycle are phones, ink cartridges and various gadgets. There are different companies that do this, for example Inksave, Cash for Cartridges, and Money4MyGadgets.

Having a really good sort out and de-clutter may not only result in finding items you can sell but also things that either you forgot that you had or that you could upcycle or mend, thus saving yourself some money. Pieces of clothing can be dyed, embellished and mended giving you some new items to wear. Old tins and jars can be turned into useful storage in the house or garage.

Alternatively, when you find yourself with items you want to get rid of you may decide to take them to a high street charity shop and help a good cause by donating your unwanted clutter that can be sold to raise funds.
